It’s been 11 years since Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady agreed to spend the rest of their lives together. On the day of their wedding anniversary, they sat together with me to reflect on their love and why they have decided to stay together.
Bea: Hi you two. Thanks for doing this with me.
Tom: No problem.
Gisele: Of course.
Bea: My boyfriend is a football fan and he thinks you are the shit.
Tom: Thanks. Be sure to tell him I say hi.
Bea: I was talking to Gisele. He literally watches the games just to see her on screen.
Gisele: That’s—thanks.
Bea: Don’t thank me. I’m not the one who thinks so.
[Silence]
Bea: Congratulations on your wedding anniversary. How long have you been married?
Gisele: 11 years.
Bea: Wow. I’ve never loved anyone for that long.
Tom: Yeah, it’s a long—.
Bea: Wait, that’s not true! I had a hamster that I loved for 11 years.
Gisele: That’s impossible. Hamsters don’t live that long.
Bea: Yeah… I realized that when I caught my mom replacing my dead hamster with a live one. She did that every 2 or 3 years.
Tom: In any case… it’s not really the same.
Bea: I never told her I knew…
[Silence]
Bea: What would you say is the key to a happy marriage?
Gisele: [pauses to think] I would say… never go to bed angry.
Bea: I’ve heard that one before but we all can’t stay up and fight all night. Some of us have work in the morning.
Tom: No.. I would say the real key is to learn to say ‘I understand’ every time your wife complains about something or is simply saying nonsense.
Gisele, to Tom: You don’t do that to me, do you, babe?
Tom, to Gisele: [laughs] No, of course not. I’ve just heard that advice a lot.
Gisele, to Tom: Really?
Tom, to Gisele: Of course, babe.
Gisele, to Tom: [laughs] Okay. Love you.
Bea: I understand…
