Happy Golden Globes nominations week! In case you haven’t heard (doubtful), the Netflix show Emily in Paris got two nominations this year, and the internet simply cannot stop talking about it. So, as the serious journalist I am, I scored an interview with the star of the show, Lily Collins. Here’s everything she and I talked about:

Adler: It’s nice to meet you, Lily.

Lily: Thanks. You too!

Adler: I got to say, I love your name, ‘Lillian’. There’s something really powerful…. yet remarkably mundane about it.

Lily: Actually, my name is just Lily.

Adler: Just Lily? [looks confused]

Lily: Yup.

Adler: Lily… like the bulbous plant with large trumpet-shaped flower on a tall, slender stem?

Lily: Uhh… yes. [laughs]

Adler: Oh… I see… I have no opinion on the name ‘Lily’.

Lily: That’s okay… [laughs]

Adler: But I don’t not like it…. it’s interesting how it rhymes with silly… and chilly…. and willy… and hilly… and—

Lily: Yeah, it rhymes with a lot of stuff.

Adler: So you get that a lot, huh?

Lily: Not really.

Adler: Anyway, how are you? I read you got nominated for a Golden Globe.

Lily: Yessss!

Adler: For [checks notes] ‘Best Comedy Actress’ for your performance in Emily in Paris?

Lily: That’s correct…!

Adler: I meant to watch it last night, so I could prepare for our chat today…. but I couldn’t stop reading the articles about it. They are savage.

Lily: What do you mean?

Adler: Well…. like every weekday at exactly 8:47 pm, I got ready to watch Netflix, so of course, I changed into my flannel pajamas and my Banana Republic indoor slippers and got myself comfortable on the sofa…

Lily: No…. what do you mean the articles are savage?

Adler: I’m getting there! [gives Lilly a look]

Lily: Sorry.

Adler: Anyway…. before pressing play I wanted to know what people had to say about the show… and I realized the 50-pound dumbbells I’ve been meaning to buy on Amazon were finally in stock again, so I bought them.

Lily: [silence]

Adler: Anyway, they arrive on Monday… then I googled ‘Emily in Paris’ and [whispers:] everyone is furious that it got two nominations.

Lily: Why are you whispering?

Adler: I just thought it would be less awkward if I did.

Lily: It’s okay… I know people have strong feelings about the show… but I’m pretty proud of it.

Adler: As you should!!

Lily: I thought you didn’t watch it…

Adler: Well, no… but that’s still the polite thing to say.

Lily: [laughs]

Adler: Anyway… I really do hope you win! Even if I’m the only one… well, and your mom is also probably rooting for you.

Lily: Thanks! And she is.

Adler: Who are the other nominees?

[Adler checks the list on his phone]

Adler: Kaley Cuoco for The Flight Attendant… good show. Elle Fanning for The Great, I love that show, and I LOVE Elle Fanning. I’m going to take it back. I hope SHE wins. SHE’S AWESOME.

[Adler looks up and makes eye contact with Lily]

Adler: But best of luck…. And thank you so much for agreeing to do this with me. Great talk!
