It’s been three days since the shocking Oprah interview with Harry and Meghan aired on CBS, and the royal family is still processing everything that was revealed. But that does not mean they have stopped working, so I was invited to the Palace to talk to Prince William about Commonwealth Day. Let’s just say that I was less interested in the commonwealth and a little more interested in talking about… something else.

Bea: Thanks for doing this with me, William.

Prince William: Of course.

Bea: Sorry I kept you waiting…. I got lost in the Palace and ended up running into your dad… who proceeded to tell me I wasn’t supposed to be there… He went on and on for 23 minutes before he allowed me to say that you were actually expecting me.

Prince William: [laughs]

Bea: I tried to interrupt him several times but he just kept on talking.

Prince William: Sounds like my dad…

Bea: I tried walking away… but he followed me. There was no getting rid of him!

Prince William: [tries not to laugh]

Bea: Anyway, I made it here. But barely.

Prince William: That’s all that matters.

Bea: So how are you?

Prince William: I’m really good, thank you.

Bea: That’s great…. but really, how are you? We all watched the interview…

Prince William: [silence]

Bea: I heard that you were ‘fuming’… Is that an accurate description of your current state?

Prince William: Yes… I would say that it is.

Bea: I see… [writes it down]

Prince William: [silence]

Bea: I notice that you did not inherit your dad’s chattiness… Can you please elaborate on how you are feeling right now?

Prince William: Well, I am obviously very disappointed…

Bea: Obviously.

Prince William: … and to tell you the truth, I completely disagree with some of the statements my brother made… especially the one about my father and me being ‘trapped’.

Bea: Because you’re not trapped or because you don’t like being called out on tv?

Prince William: Because I am not trapped, I’m… bounded by duty.

Bea: You’re not free to leave your role…. but you also don’t want to. And that makes all the difference.

Prince William: Absolutely, it does.

Bea: Then again, if you wanted to leave, you wouldn’t be able to, so… Tricky. I guess trapped is the right word after all.

Prince William: It is not.

Bea: I sense some anger coming from you… Would you say it’s directed at me or your brother?

Prince William: [silence]

Bea: Or both. It could be both… You can tell me. It’s okay for a man to talk about his feelings with a journalist.

Prince William: Why don’t we move on?

Bea: According to your brother… Harry… you two are not currently speaking to one another… but he hopes some space and time will heal your relationship. In the meantime, Harry is making a lot of money with his Netflix and Spotify deals. Thoughts?

Prince William: I do not want to talk about my brother.

Bea: Okay. Why don’t we discuss who in the family said those racist comments?

Prince William: Yes, perhaps some space and time will help health the relationship with Harry…

Bea: I certainly wish that for you two. [smiles]

Prince William: I believe our time is up, isn’t it?

Bea: Yes. Thanks again for doing this with me… And if you can give me specific directions on how to leave with zero chance of running into your father, I’d really appreciate it.
