Adele just turned 32-years-old, and to mark the occasion she shared a picture of herself on Instagram. But because nothing is simple in this life, the picture sparked an Internet debate on weight loss and whether or not it’s okay to comment on people’s appearances. I, of course, called her on the phone to find out how she feels about all this drama.
Bea: Hi Adele. Thanks for doing this with me.
Adele: Of course. I’m happy to.
Bea: It was your birthday yesterday, right? Congrats!
Adele: Yeah. Thanks. It’s hard to believe I’m a 32-year-old woman now.
Bea: It’s not, actually. You look like a woman in her thirties.
[Silence]
Bea: Did you do anything special to celebrate?
Adele: Mmm… I had my favorite meal delivered… and my mom and son filled the house with balloons so the day would feel festive.
Bea: I also had my favorite meal delivered yesterday. And the day before. And almost every day for the past 8 weeks, really.
[Adele smiles politely.]
Bea: I noticed you lost a little bit of weight.
Adele: Yeah. About 120 pounds.
Bea: I don’t know if you’re aware but the whole internet is talking about it.
Adele: [laughs] I’m aware…
Bea: Some people are praising you for it, but others are upset that you’ve lost weight… and a few are saying it’s no one’s business what you do with your body.
Adele: Well… it’s not just the internet talking about this. People in my life, my friends and family also feel the right to comment.
Bea: Meanwhile I also lost weight recently and no one—and I mean NO ONE—has given a shit.
Adele: How much did you lose?
Bea: Three and a half pounds. I’m pretty proud…
[Silence]
Bea: Does it bother you that people talk about your weight loss?
Adele: I think … it’s natural. It’s a normal response to seeing someone change the shape of their body drastically.
Bea: I get it…. Like if I were to dye my hair pink, people would notice and they’d comment on it…. I hope…. or what else does a non-celebrity need to do to get a well-deserved compliment around here?!
