Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently moved out of Los Angeles and into their brand-new home in Santa Barbara. I was able to speak with Harry on a Zoom video call about the move and what this represents for him and his family of three.

Bea: Thanks for doing this with me, Harry.

Harry: Of course.

Bea: How are you doing? Are you all settled in your new home?

Harry: Tha— [Harry’s image freezes for a few seconds.]

Bea: Harry?!

Harry: Sola— [Harry’s image freezes again.]

Bea: Was that a ‘yes’?!

Harry: Than— [Harry’s image freezes again.]

Bea: Blink twice if it’s a ‘yes’!!

Harry: — so thank you for asking.

Bea:

[Silence]

Bea: So property listings say your new house includes 9 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms. What’s up with that? You only have one son.

Harry: Yes, well, we needed extra rooms for the full-time staff of cooks, gardeners and housekeepers.

Bea: Right… I forgot about the housekeepers….. but maybe with a smaller house you wouldn’t need as much help, and perhaps the staff could sleep in their own house, right?

Harry: No… I’ve always had a lot of housekeepers.

Bea: Well, yes but—

Harry: We also wanted a big home so our family can visit whenever they want to…

Bea: So you have 9 bedrooms in case Meghan’s mother, who’s her only sane relative, wants to come stay with you?

Harry: Exactly. Or my family in the UK… you never know.

Bea: Really? I was under the impression that the Queen would rather dye her poofy hair green than come visit you and Meghan …  but that’s nice of her. She’s the sweetest!

Harry: Well, it’s just in case…

Bea: Gotcha.

Harry: [Silence]

Bea: Well, I’m glad everything is working out for you guys… and that you were able to buy a $14.7 million dollar mansion even though you are both unemployed, have a 1-year-old, and you still owe the British taxpayer $3.1 million dollars for the renovation of your last home.

Harry: Well, we did take out a $9.5 million dollar mortgage to be able to afford this beautiful house.

Bea: Oh, so you got into even more debt. Makes sense.

Harry: We had no choice. It was really important to us to strike out on our own and buy it without any help from my family.

Bea: And yet no one thought of buying a smaller home?

Harry: We would’ve…. but what about the housekeepers?
