Fans rarely get an inside look into the life of Angelina Jolie. But after agreeing to do an interview with British Vogue, the actor, film-maker, mother and humanitarian got many calls from us, trying to convince her to do the same with MockDiaries.com.
Here’s my candid conversation with the Hollywood icon:
Adler: It is such a pleasure to meet you, Angelina.
Angelina: Thank you, it’s nice to meet you too.
Adler: You know, when my editor told me I had to interview ‘Angelina Jolie’…. I was like: a) Yes, b) It’s on, and c) This is the best day of my life, as well as my father’s life, and my father’s father.
Angelina: Oh [laughs]
Adler: Well, not that day…. I was in the office… and I was only talking to Joan… but, you know…. today, with you… you get it.
Angelina: [laughs]
Adler: Anyway, finding out that I was going to interview you…. well, I had to say to myself, ‘You are ready for this,’ ‘This is your moment to shine,’ ‘You got this, Justin’… That’s my first name, by the way.
Angelina: Ok.
Adler: Because let me tell you something, it can be very… intimidating… to sit down across from you. But not to me. I’m not intimidated… At all… But that’s because I’m a professional.
Angelina: Great. That’s… that’s why we’re both here.
Adler: And I love it… I love interviewing people. Interviewing…. it’s all about rhythm… I ask a good question, and then the interviewee… that’s you… gives a good answer, and then I ask another good question… It’s not easy.
Angelina: [silence]
Adler: … but it is certainly when I’m at my happiest…. no, scratch that … it’s when I’m at my most jubilant.
Angelina: Good… so, shall we start?
Adler: But the most important thing about today is…. for me…. to remember that I’m supposed to be here… and not because the rest of my colleagues were busy with other things today, but because… I always set the right mood for a good interview… You know?
Angelina: Listen, I don’t have a lot of time left. Do you have any questions for me?
Adler: Yes, of course I do…. Let me just find the notebook where I wrote them down…
[Angelina rolls her eyes… slightly]
Adler: Found it! … I told you I’m good at this.
Angelina: [says nothing]
Adler: So, I know you did an interview with British Vogue a few days ago…. it’s awesome, by the way, very candid… I almost finished it.
Angelina: I did… yes.
Adler: I was thinking, why don’t you tell me something you didn’t already tell them…?
Angelina: [silence]
Adler: Or if you want, I can ask a specific question… I just wanted you to have options.
Angelina: [begins to look impatient]
Adler: Let’s talk about your tattoos… you have so many of them and I’m sure the meaning behind each one is very special. My question is, did they hurt?
Angelina: No… Well, some.
Adler: I don’t have tattoos… I haven’t really found something I’m passionate about enough to tattoo it on me….
Angelina: What about interviewing? You seem passionate enough about that.
Adler: That’s true… I guess I just don’t like the way they look… ON ME. Yours are a clear masterpiece and they look beautiful on your smooth skin.
Angelina: Thank you.
Adler: Anyway, I read you moved to a new home…. and that it happens to be really close to Brad Pitt. Was that a conscious decision or did they refuse to give you back the down payment?
Angelina: I wanted my kids to be close to their dad. It’s good for them… and it makes everyone’s life easier.
Adler: Of course. And who knows… since you’re living so close… maybe you and him… you know… could get together and let me interview you at the same time… That would be great for me.
Angelina: [bursts out laughing]
Adler: I don’t get it. What’s so funny about that?
Angelina: Listen, this was…. great…. but unfortunately my team is signaling me that it’s time to go.
Adler: Okay but…. you’ll think about it and let me know? I’ll contact you…
