In the wake of last week’s royal drama that saw Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announce they are stepping down from their royal roles, Prince William agreed to talk to me about what his brother’s decision means to him and his entire family.
Bea: Hi. Thank you so much for doing this.
William: No problem.
Bea: I’m so nervous. I’ve never met a royal before.
William: *Smiles*
Bea: Actually, that’s not true. I interviewed Meghan, but she doesn’t count.
William: …
Bea: What should I call you? Duke, Will? Or do you prefer something more casual like Willy?
William: People refer to me as Your Royal Highness.
Bea: Nah, that’s too long.
William: …
Bea: Be honest. What do you think about your brother’s decision of stepping back from royal duties?
William: It’s complicated… I believe he thinks he’s doing what’s right for his family, but… let’s just say I would have done things differently.
Bea: Totes.
William: But my family supports him. No matter what, we are brothers.
Bea: Do you like Meghan?
William: Of course. She’s great.
Bea: Don’t lie to me, Willy.
William: She’s family. That’s all I’m going to say.
Bea: You are a classy guy, Duke. There’s a lot I could learn from you.
William: Please stop referring to me as ‘Willy’ or ‘Duke.’
Bea: How’s your grandma?
William: The Queen? She’s fine. She’s amazing.
Bea: No, your other grandma.
William: She died in 2004.
Bea: Wow. So not great, huh?
William: How long is this interview?
Bea: I was told I had 2 hours.
William: How long has it been?
Bea: Counting how long it took me to set up and that you and your team were 10 minutes late, a solid 12 min.
William: Great.
Bea: Time flies when you’re having fun with a royal.
William: Yeah. I hate to do this but I just got a call and I have to go.
William gets up.
Bea: When? I didn’t see you use your phone.
William leaves the room.
Bea: What the royal crap? We were having a great time!
