Cameron Diaz retired from acting six years ago, but lucky for everyone she’s been making herself more public on social media. She’s agreed to talk to me about her life, but since we are all during lockdown, I called her on the phone.
Lisa: Hello, my name is Lisa Martin. May I speak with Cameron Michelle Diaz?
Cameron: Hi Lisa.
Lisa: Hi!
Cameron: Give me 2 seconds, I’m moving to the couch to be more comfortable.
Lisa: Okay. But then can I speak with Cameron Michelle Diaz?
Cameron: I am Cameron!
Lisa: Oh gosh, sorry. Your voice is so deep, I thought you were a man.
[Silence]
Cameron: Okay, I’m set. We can start.
Lisa: Great. How are you? How’s life under quarantine going?
Cameron: Oh, it’s good. It’s really good. I’m honestly thriving. My husband is thriving… We are thriving as individuals, and we’re thriving as a couple.
Lisa: Shit.
Cameron: I know. It’s great.
Lisa: I spilled my chocolate milk all over my pink dress!
Cameron: What?
Lisa: Oh jeez, it’s on my couch too!!
Cameron: Are you okay?
Lisa: I’m definitely not thriving right now.
[Silence]
Cameron: Do you need to hang up so you can get cleaned up?
Lisa: It’s fine, I’ll change while we talk. Why don’t you tell me about your newborn baby?
Cameron: Aww, she is THE cutest. Her name is Raddix and she’s 3-months-old.
Lisa: Radish? Why did you name her Radish?
Cameron: No, not radish, Raddix.
Lisa: Ohhh… that’s not any less weird.
Cameron: It’s a combination of the word ‘rad’, which is our favorite word and ‘new beginnings’, which is exactly what she represents to us. It’s a fitting sentiment after our challenging journey to parenthood.
Lisa: Sorry, I was changing and I missed that. What did you say?
Cameron: [sighs] It’s a name that means a lot to me and my husband.
Lisa: Uh-huh. Listen, I think I’m gonna go… My hamster is drinking the chocolate milk off the couch and I think that might kill it.
Cameron: Oh gosh, of course, that’s no—
[Lisa hangs up].
