Breastfeeding baby No. 2 has been an experience for Jenna Dewan. The actress went on to reveal on Instagram that as compared to her first time nursing a baby, her 5-month-old Callum Michael Rebel has presented a few unique challenges.
I met Jenna at the lobby of a Four Seasons’ hotel in downtown Los Angeles to talk about this matter.
Adler: Are you Jenna Dewan? [looking at her manager] Is she Jenna Dewan?!
Jenna: Hello… yes…. I’m Jenna.
Adler: Oh finally. You’re the ninth woman in here that I ask if they’re you…. that security guy even started following me.
Jenna: You found me….
Adler [to the security guard]: I told you I was not a stalker!
[Jenna and I sit down.]
Adler: Jeez… And my horoscope said my charm was gonna be obvious today…. And that it would “enable me to have a good time doing just about anything”. What a bunch of baloney.
Jenna: What’s your Zodiac sign?
Adler: I’m a Leo… obviously.
Jenna: Cool. I’m a Sagittarius.
Adler: Oh, we’re going to get along just fine then.
Jenna: [smiles]
Adler: I’m Adler, by the way. [shaking Jenna’s hand]
Jenna: Nice to meet you, Adler.
Adler: So breastfeeding…
Jenna: … yes?
Adler: I was hoping you’d complete that sentence for me… ‘cause the last time I talked about breastfeeding was… nope, I’ve never talked about breastfeeding before. It has never come up.
Jenna: Uhhh well… I would like people to know that it’s incredible, but it can also be very challenging.
Adler: Challenging, huh? Okay… I hear you… I get ya…
Jenna: Us, women, have all this pressure to breastfeed instead of giving formula, but what we don’t hear so often is that it’s not always possible…from latching issues, to… my son, for example, he loves one side more than the other… and that is—
Adler: That is totally normal! THAT has come up in plenty of my conversations and I’m telling you… it happens to the best of us. We almost always have a favorite one… you love them both, but one is always… there’s always one that you connect with on a deeper level, you know?
Jenna: [laughs] Well yes, of course it’s normal for the baby to have a favorite one, but that’s not necessarily good for the mother’s body…
Adler: What?! What do you mean?
Jenna: It’s uncomfortable for us. ‘Cause you need the milk to…
Adler: OH… because of the milk! Gotcha. No… I don’t do that… no milk for me.
Jenna: Well, we’re talking about babies here… Anyway, it’s all a beautiful thing but my point is, it’s not always easy and it’s okay to ask for help, you know?
Adler: [looking a little stunned] … yeah… I think…. Though how is a baby supposed to ask for help? That part is confusing me….
Jenna: Not the baby…. the mother! It’s important than mothers know it’s okay to ask for help.
Adler: Ohhhhhh [nodding profusely]. Gotcha.
Jenna: Yeah.
Adler: … I told you we would get along well. [smiles]
