It’s Zendaya’s 24th birthday today and I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with her at a theater lobby in downtown LA. Here’s everything that happened:

Lisa: First of all, happy birthday.

Zendaya: Tha—

Lisa: Here. I brought you a cupcake.

[Lisa gives Zendaya a red velvet cupcake.]

Zendaya: Wow. That’s so nice of you.

Lisa: But don’t eat it…. I may have accidentally dropped it in the parking lot where I parked my car and then put it back in the container ‘cause I didn’t wanna leave it there like a cupcake that nobody wants.

Zendaya: Ok…. [laughs] Thanks for the heads up.

Lisa: No problem. I feel like you would have noticed anyway ‘cause it also got wet.

Zendaya: Gotcha.

Lisa: Apart from the cupcake situation, are you having a good birthday?

Zendaya: Yes, I am. It’s been a pretty chillaxing day so… can’t really complain.

Lisa: Oh, good. Relaxing birthdays are the best, if you like that sort of thing… I’m a party person myself so on my birthday I like to party hard until at least 8 pm.

Zendaya: [laughs] Eight at night is your limit?

Lisa: Oh, yeah. But only because my parties start pretty early… I usually ask my guests to arrive at 2 pm so we can play board games before moving things to the living room to drink all kinds of tea. I’ve been really into tea for the past few years.

Zendaya: [laughs] I get that. I drink a cup of herbal tea every morning….

Lisa: You probably have regular bowel movements then…

Zendaya: Yes, in fact, I do.

Lisa: Twinsies…! [pauses] Did you see that #HappyBirthdayZendaya has been trending on Twitter all day?

Zendaya: What can I say? I literally have the best fans in the world…

Lisa: I think you do… and I’m a certified psychologist by the Online University of Hawarts, so I’d know.

Zendaya: Wow… didn’t know that was a real university…

Lisa: Oh, it is. And that’s why I know a loyal fan when I see one… well, in this case, when I read their super intense comments on Twitter, but I can spot them in real life too. They act like really crazy and start crying and stuff.

Zendaya: Yeah… my fans are pretty awesome.

Lisa: And what about that special man in your life…?

Zendaya: Jacob—what about him?

Lisa: Jacob? I thought Timothée Chalamet was your lover…

Zendaya: Nah, Timothée’s just a friend.

Lisa: Well “your friend” wrote you a pretty “interesting” birthday message on Twitter. And when I say “interesting” I mean “like a lover”.

Zendaya: That’s just how he is… he’s very sweet and caring.

Lisa: Like every lover should be…

Zendaya: [laughs] Nah, seriously, he’s like my brother.

Lisa: Ok, I believe you. I just don’t think he knows that…

Zendaya: He does…. I promise you he does.

Lisa: [nods]

Zendaya: [laughs]

Lisa: Looks like our time is up… your manager has been signaling me for a few minutes now and he doesn’t look very happy… Do you think he’s upset there were no chairs for him?

Zendaya: Nah, that’s just how he looks sometimes, but he’s cool.

Lisa: Cool. Thanks for coming, Zendaya.
